Drawing Parallels – Life of Police vs Life of HR

Dear Member,

Police officers maintain law and order: protect members of the public and their property; prevent, detect and investigate crime. They are an integral part of the community. HR professionals maintain the culture and value system of the organization: protecting the interests of the employees and management, executing welfare measures, prevent and investigate disciplinary incidents. They are an integral part of the organization. With a lot of similarities in the roles, there is a lot of cross learning that each of us can take away.

During the session this month, our speaker will be talking about recruitment and performance management in the police force, what are the motivation factors for them – is it the power and authority or is it working for the larger cause?, what are the challenges in handling public especially when they do not have a very positive image about you etc. He will share interesting anecdotes from his personal experience and draw parallels with the HR profession on how we can handle employees, motivate them and overcome some of the challenges of the role.

The newly elected team of NHRD Chennai Chapter invites all its members for the very first session with a Super Cop who is also a motivational speaker, an avid fitness enthusiast, an athlete and an author who will enthrall us with his insights coupled with great persona and style.

Financial Well Being – A call to action

Dear Member,

According to a SHRM study on Financial Wellness in workplace 2014, seven out of 10 HR professionals indicated that personal financial challenges have a large or some impact on their employees’ performance, with about one-half reporting that employee stress (50%) and the ability to focus on work (47%) are the aspects of employee performance most negatively affected by personal financial challenges. In such scenarios it is imperative that HR professionals understand the impact of financial wellness of employees over their performance and longevity in the organization and design benefits accordingly.

The speaker for this month will be sharing her research on the topic of financial well-being in the context of long term savings for employees in the evolving cultural and macro-economic contours such as nuclear families, limited social security, sustained high inflation etc.

Power of Networking

Dear Member,

Networking has long been recognized as a powerful tool for business people and professionals. Knowing more people gives you greater access, facilitates the sharing of information, and makes it easier to influence others for the simple reason that influencing people you know is easier than influencing strangers. The creators of LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter have built their empires on the presumption that their social networking tools help people build their networks and remain better connected than ever. Does it follow, then, that social networks, by making connectivity easier, make leaders more powerful? The answer is no.

Clearly, social networks allow you learn about other people you might never have known of otherwise. But these benefits of social networking, while valuable to some degree depending on how robustly you use these networks, miss the essence of what makes networking such a powerful tool for leaders and other highly influential people. This month our speaker will be focusing on that essence of networking especially for the HR fraternity in building stronger relationships, mutual trust and respect
